Rani Mukerji’s much anticipated film Aiyyaa that had her undergo an image makeover has failed to notch the needed figures at the box office in the first weekend.
The film opened to a dismal response on Friday and failed to pick up much on Saturday and Sunday, thus coming a cropper in the first weekend. The first weekend collection of Aiyyaa ranges between Rs. 4.50 crore to Rs. 5 crore nett, which is disappointingly low for a film that was marketed extensively and whose songs became a rage on YouTube.
In comparison, Akshay Kumar’s Omg Oh My God! made Rs. 8.5 crore nett in its third weekend, just showing how low the footfalls have been for Rani Mukerji’s Aiyyaa.
Bhoot Returns by Ram Gopal Varma has also met a similar disastrous fate in its first weekend run, just scraping past the Rs. 3.50 crore nett mark in its first three days. Poor.
The other two releases Chittagong and Makkhi too were dull at box office, despite both of them getting good reviews.
Meanwhile, Sridevi’s English Vinglish is doing well and rounded off its 10-day run at theatres with a collection of Rs. 29 crore nett.
The coming Friday would see the release of Karan Johar’s film Student Of The Year, introducing Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Siddharth Malhotra.
