|He recently tasted the first fruit of success with his critically acclaimed hit film Kai Po Che!, and as one of the male leads of the film, Raj Kumar Yadav was also praised for his nuanced performance of a simple boy. But instead of resting on his laurels, the actor is raring to push the envelope. Thus when a role demanded him to shoot in the buff, he was glad to overcome his inhibitions and gave it a shot.
Raj Kumar Yadav is the main protagonist of the film Shahid, based on the life of the slain lawyer and human rights activist, Shahid Azmi, and the actor didn’t shy away from dropping all his clothes for a scene where his character is humiliated in police torture.
The actor, who has studied acting from Film and Television Institute of India, said he had no qualms going nude for the scene: “I felt no shame. I only felt the character’s pain. I wasn’t thinking of how much of my nudity was on display. I think once I took all my clothes off I was better able to understand the humiliation of my character in police torture.”
The Shahid director Hansal Mehta did try to make things easier for him, but being a method actor Raj Kumar has his own way of tackling crucial scenes. Remember, he shot for a love-making scene in his debut film Love Sex Aur Dhokha as well. While shooting the sequence, the director asked all the technicians to leave the set, except the cameramen. But later Raj Kumar Yadav himself invited them back as he wanted to feel the embarrassment of being watched naked by people.
Produced by Anurag Kashyap, Shahid already had its world premiere at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival’s ‘City to City’ programme in September 2012. The film was shot on a small budget and it took nine months to complete. The movie also stars Tigmanshu Dhulia and K K Menon.
