Movie Review: 'Go Goa Gone' is bloody good

'Go Goa Gone' is a wacky, funny zom-com

The ApunKaChoice movie review of Go Goa Gone. Please welcome the zombies in the Bollywood horrorland where chudails, dayans, tantrics, and bhoots with ketchup as make-up have for years done the task of scaring the daylights out of us, and, at times, even making us laugh, unintentionally of course. Now, director duo Krishna D.K. and Raj Nidimoru try to do the both, intentionally.

The duo introduces to us Bollywood’s first zombies in a film that’s more funny than scary. Go Goa Gone is a freewheeling, trippy ride through the wilderness of an island where four revelers are stranded with zombies lusting for their flesh and blood.

Hardik (Kunal Khemu) is aptly named. As horny as he is a dopehead, Hardik is caught with his pants down by his boss and given the pink slip. Luv (Vir Das), again aptly named, is the mushy sort weaving dreams of marriage with a girlfriend who’s already romping around with another guy. Bunny (Anand Tiwari) is the career-minded lad with whom the duo (Hardik and Luv) tag along on a trip to Goa to escape their screwed up city lives. And what a getaway it turns out to be.

Along with a pretty chick Luna (Puja Gupta), the trio gatecrashes a rave party on an island but wake up in the morning to an unexpected horror. A new highly potent drug has transformed some revelers into flesh eating zombies. The quartet’s only hope of survival seems to be the Russian Mafioso Boris (Saif Ali Khan) who walks with a shotgun and coolly announces in faux accent: “I keel ded pipal”.

The best thing about Go Goa Gone is that it panders to no norm or convention. The director duo lets their imagination run riot from the start but seems at a loss in the second half when the zombies versus humans cat-and-mouse game becomes a tad predictable and monotonous. What keeps our interest from waning is a slew of crunchy one-liners that more often than not leave us in splits. Humour mostly comes from the repartee between Kunal Khemu, Vir Das and Anand Tiwari. Kunal is natural with comedy, Vir Das looks deliberately understated, while Anand Tiwari is truly a revelation. Just when you least expect, he lends his mirthful punch to a good effect.

Saif Ali Khan makes a stylish entry and keeps one thoroughly entertained with his gun-toting antics, his funny accent, and his desi gaalibaazi. Puja Gupta is more of an eye-candy in a film spattered with blood and gore.

The music, both songs and background, is topnotch and blends seamlessly into the film’s fabric; cinematography too is cutting edge.

In a nutshell, Go Goa Gone may not be a riot one expected it to be, but the film is darn funny and a bit scary as well to merit a watch.
