|The music composer-turned-producer Himesh Reshammiya has got the remake rights of Shekhar Kapur’s classic film Masoom (1983). While there are reports of Nawazuddin Siddiqui being cast as Naseeruddin Shah in the remake, grapevine suggests that Himesh is fixated on the jodi of Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan for the movie.
It’s learnt that Himesh Reshammiya has negotiated for the remake rights of Masoom, a cult family drama, with the original producers Chanda Dutt and Devi Dutt. The original, based on Erich Segal’s book Man, Woman and Child, starred Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi as a happily-married couple with two kids, but all hell breaks loose when the wife comes to know about her husband’s illegitimate son. How she comes to terms with the boy as a part of her family, and her husband, forms the crux of the movie.
The remake is going to be directed by Bedabrata Pain, whose historical drama Chittagong last year was hailed for its cinematic brilliance. The director has even confirmed that he is planning to remake Masoom in today’s context.
“Indian society has changed drastically since Masoom was made and it is my challenge to portray an eternal love story in a new social environment,” the director is quoted as saying. A National Award winner, Bedabrata Pain also talked about Nawazuddin Siddiqui being considered for the role of Naseeruddin Shah, but refused to divulge much detail.
Now, as per sources, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai have agreed “in principle” to be in the film, produced by Himesh Reshammiya. Insiders even claim that the details are being chalked out, reports a tabloid.
Recently, at a promotional event for one of her endorsement brands, Aishwarya Rai did say that once she signs a film, a formal announcement will be made. So is she really thinking of doing the Masoom remake?
If the movie features her dear hubby Abhishek Bachchan, why not!
