|Unlike Mala of the original Zanjeer, Priyanka Chopra plays a modern girl in the remake of the film. The actress has two distinct looks for the movie as she plays an NRI who later falls in love with a police inspector. Ooh! it sounds glamorous, but is Priyanka’s role in Zanjeer worth her caliber?
Priyanka Chopra plays Mala in the movie. She is a spunky NRI, crazy about Bollywood, and lands up in Mumbai only to find trouble. According to director Apoorva Lakhia, Priyanka plays the naive and innocent girl who comes to Mumbai for a wedding, and eventually becomes one of the prime witnesses in a case. That’s how she gets to meet Inspector Vijay, played by Ram Charan Teja.
Well, does that sound a meaty role? From the trailers we know that the actress has played the part with honesty, and she also looks stunning, sporting a new haircut with bangs. Since the movie is a hardcore actioner -- that too based on oil mafia -- it’s possible that there is little for Priyanka Chopra to do in it. While the actress played an intense role of a strong female in action-thriller Don 2, in Zanjeer she seems more like a damsel in distress.
Now, something about the movie! Director Apoorva Lakhia talks about his inspiration for the movie, and why it is different from Amitabh Bachchan’s Zanjeer. “We wanted to make the film realistic and about current events. So, when I was offered the film, the Sonavane killing and the oil mafia were in the news. We took inspiration from that and framed the basic story structure around that,” Lakhia tells a daily.
Also, crime journalist J Dey’s character is woven in the film as it was relevant to the plot as Dey lost his life while carrying out an investigation on the oil mafia. Actor Atul Kulkarni gets to play the role of investigative reporter, based on J Dey, in the film.
So, there are five-six characters in the film, including Prakash Raj, Mahie Gill and Sanjay Dutt, who all are crucial to its plot. Let’s see how Priyanka shines above the rest in Zanjeer, releasing on September 6.
