Hitting theatres on a national holiday, Ranbir Kapoor’s Besharam opened to a good start on Wednesday, but the coming days will be the film’s litmus test.
The movie, directed by Abhinav Singh Kashyap, had the second widest release of all time for a Bollywood movie with 3500 screens. The audience response was most heartening in Delhi and Punjab on the opening day. Multiplexes had witnessed a good advance booking and the holiday did bring in a lot of footfalls.
As per early estimates, the film raked in around Rs. 20 crore net on its opening day. It’s below par as an opening day of Rs. 25 crore was expected for a holiday release of a star who gave the superhit Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani a few months back.
In comparison, YJHD’s opening day was Rs. 19.45 crore net, but let’s not forget that the film released on a non-holiday.
A majority of critics have panned the film for its crude humour, but it’s the audiences who always have the last say in making a film hit or flop.
Now, what remains to be seen is whether Besharam can keep the momentum going throughout the opening weekend. Just for comparison, YJHD stormed into the 100 crore club in seven days. Does Besharam have the meat to go the distance?
