A blood-stained love story

‘Some love stories have blood on them,’ screams the punch-line on the posters of Kurbaan, directed by Rensil D’Silva and starring Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor in lead roles.

The movie has Kareena playing Avantika, a psychology professor in New York. She comes to India to take care of her ailing dad and meets Ehsaan (Saif), a teacher at a university where Avantika lands a temporary job.

Avantika can’t keep away from Ehsaan’s winning charm for long. Though their friendship begins on a wrong foot when she spots Ehsaan trying to steal a cab, Avantika soon finds herself drawn towards Ehsaan. Love sprouts and blooms and even Avantika’s reluctant father blesses this Hindu-Muslim match.

Ehsaan and Avantika get married and fly to the US to settle down. She even finds a job for him at a university.

The lovers settle down in a conservative Muslim neighbourhood in New York. As the duo mix up with their neighbours, Avantika is unable to fit in. For instance, she has to dine separately from Ehsaan, with other women. This conservative code of conduct is set by an elderly orthodox Muslim couple who command everyone’s respect in the neighbourhood.

Then, one young woman named Salma lets out a secret to Avantika, setting off a series of events that snowball to deadly proportions as she finds out that her husband Ehsaan is not what he appears.

The supporting roles in the film are played by Vivek Oberoi, Dia Mirza, Om Puri and Kirron Kher.

The film’s music is by Sulaiman-Salim and costumes are by Aki Narula.

‘Kurbaan’ is set to release in November 2009.
