Playing Shehnai |
Ranbir Kapoor finally had a chance to share screen space with the legendary actor Shammi Kapoor in Rockstar. Though Shammi ji did many cameos on request for various Bollywood films, his grand-nephew Ranbir only had the great and rare opportunity to act with him when his film Rockstar happened.
Director Imtiaz Ali is still in awe of this jubilant man, who in spite of being on dialysis for the last ten years, agreed to do his film Rockstar. Imtiaz reminisces about Shammi ji and says: “We all knew that the rockstar was on sets and all of us including Ranbir were just his attendants.”
Shammi Kapoor who has mostly been keeping away from films in his sunset years, will last be seen in grand-nephew Ranbir Kapoor’s film Rockstar. The movie, directed by Imtiaz Ali, is slated to release on November 11. It will have Shammi Kapoor and Ranbir Kaooor together in a “jugalbandi” where Ranbir will be playing a guitar while Shammi will play a shehnai.
“I was fortunate to get close to him and work with him. He is irreplaceable. It is a loss to the film industry...it is a sad news,” Imtiaz Ali told reporters outside his residence.
Shammi had earlier said that playing shehnai had always been his passion and was happy to show skills in Rockstar. A computer enthusiast, as he called himself, he was also one of the firsts from Bollywood to join Twitter, introducing himself to fans as a “renaissance man, retired actor and computer buff.” |
