True that if a movie is a body, the script is its soul; but one cannot argue with the fact that actors form the backbone of this body. Even great scripts can come a cropper by average performances, and likewise, average scripts can become cult films if backed by exceptional acting performances.
Like every year, 2012 saw the release of some quality movies featuring some laudable performances. What was great to see was that age was no bar as far as the nominations were concerned; since this year, while an 85-year-old actress became the oldest ever to have been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, a 9-year-old child-actress too hogged the limelight by becoming the youngest actress ever to be nominated for the same category. Talent certainly isn’t age-bound!
Out of the five actresses nominated for the coveted award, Jessica Chastain earned her second Academy Award nomination for Zero Dark Thirty. Last year, too, she was nominated in the same category for her portrayal of the thick-makeup-wearing woman Celia Foote in The Help.
The 2012-release Zero Dark Thirty saw Jessica Chastain play Maya, a CIA agent who undertakes a decade-long search for Osama bin Laden. While this successful mission saw the involvement of a lot of officials, it was Maya who can be credited as the nucleus of this operation, or as she put it in the movie, the “m****f****r” who finds the whereabouts of the most wanted man.
