The story begins in 1971, with the formation of Bangladesh. Two kids, both orphans and friends, are shoved out from a truck carrying refugees to India. They are Bikram and Bala. They begin their lives in the lanes of Calcutta as gun couriers; and they get into coal smuggling.
As the strapping Bikram (Ranveer Singh) and Bala (Arjun Kapoor), the two make their mark as the most audacious looters of coal. In one scene they jump off a cliff onto a freight train carrying coal and are confronted with a rival gang of smugglers.
“Aaj ko iss koyle se bhari hui train ko lekar nikal gaya, train bhi uski, koyle ka dhandha bhi uska,” thunders Bikram.
The friendship of Bikram and Bala stands the test of time, so much so that the Calcuttans swear by their bond. And when they fall in love, it’s with the same girl, Nandita (Priyanka Chopra), the most beautiful cabaret dancer in the city.
Bikram and Bala’s dream run as Gunday is interrupted with the entry of a dauntless cop, played by Irrfan Khan.
