Actress Mallika Sherawat spoke up for women’s cause at the United Nations’ 65th Annual Department of Public Information (DPI)/Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) conference.
The outspoken actress, who has drawn some flak back home for her bold statements on the state of women in India, said in her UN address that men have to be part of the solution if the lot of women has to be improved.
“India cannot realise its full potential if women do not rise along. Men have to part of the solution. We cannot leave men behind. Both men and women are in this together… This creates true empowerment when everyone gets an equal chance,” she said.
The 39-year-old underscored that women have to daily deal with prejudices, male-dominated patriarchal society, caste system and insensitivity of justice system. She stressed that a strong legal system needs to be put in place so that the guilty don’t go unpunished.
