'Kireedam' -Worth a Watch

‘Kireedam’ is an authentic Tamil remake of the Malayalam original of the same name starring megastar Mohanlal.

The most notable feature of the Tamil version is that director Vijay has scrupulously avoided the tendency to make it a formula film cashing in the image of superstar Ajith.

The

film marks a turning point in the career of Ajith, too, who has come up with a riveting performance as the lead character. In a way, it is not a typical Ajith movie in which normally he plays the larger-than-life character buttressed by the typical trappings of a superstar film.

To put it in other words, Ajith has been made to look a vulnerable young man who is forced into actions dictated by a combination of circumstances. An emotion-packed family drama that you can identify with.

Rajarajan (brilliantly enacted by Raj Kiran) is an honest police constable whose ambition in life is to make his eldest son Sakthivel (Ajith) a policeman.

An affectionate wife (Saranya), two daughters and an unemployed son-in-law (Vivek) make up his large family. Sakthi, waiting for his posting as a policeman, meanwhile falls in love with a fun-loving college student Divya (Trisha).

A man who cannot stand injustice, Rajarajan slaps the son of the local MLA who roughs up another policeman in public. The upright constable refuses to apologise to the MLA’s son. But he pays the penalty by getting transferred to another small town, dominated by a gangster Varadarajan (Ajay).

Trouble awaits Rajarajan in the new place as well. He is horrified by the reluctance of the local policemen to file an FIR against the gangster who bashes up Sub-inspector (Ravi Kala)

Sakthi’s life also turns into a nightmare the day he is supposed to join the police force. An incident which happens on that day changes life for the worse for the youngster. Rajarajan’s cup of misery runs over. Will Sakthi succeed in fulfilling his father’s dream? The denouement makes for an enthralling watch.

Ajith and Raj Kiran walk away with the acting honours. Trisha is a close second. The heroine with an impish grin excels in the comedy scenes. She also looks ravishing in a variety of fetching costumes, especially in the dream song Akkam Pakkam, beautifully picturised by Tiru’s caressing camera.

Saranya and K P A C Lalitha acquit themselves well as the mother and grandmother respectively. The Vivek-Santhanam team brings down the roof with their comedy acts.

The one drawback is the weak characterization of the villain played by Ajay. He is far from convincing and looks not menacing enough.

Music composer G V Prakash is in his elements. Two songs, Kanavellam and Akkam Pakkam are melodious and rocking.

Both director Vijay and the producers deserve kudos for coming up with a film that is not the run-of-the mill Tamil movie. They have made a sincere effort to tackle a serious theme, the bonding between a father and son and the foibles human beings are prone to.

A realistic film that leaves you disturbed and sets you thinking.

Worth watching.
