Censor Board was set up to certify films fit for public display but it has become more of a barrier between cinema and audience, feels renowned film maker Shyam Benegal .
"Censor Board is working as a barrier between films and the audience. If people can vote and choose government, can't they make judgement about cinema," he says.
"There is no need of having a Central Board for Film Certification (Censor Board) in India. The audience is mature enough to choose between what they should watch and what not," says Benegal, who was in New Delhi recently to receive an award.
He even suggests that it is a totally 'useless' institute, which should be scrapped.
The maker of classics like Manthan, Nishant, Chakra, Zubeida , The Making of Mahatma and Discovery of India, Benegal firmly believes that the choice of Indian audience has changed over the years.
"The movies we made in the seventies are not acceptable today. People are not willing to spend money on that kind of work any more," he says noting they want only entertainment, not preaching."
