Padma Awards for SRK, Yash Chopra, Manna Dey

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan , king of romantic blockbusters Yash Chopra and veteran singer Manna Dey added a dash of celluloid glamour to the list of Padma awardees announced Tuesday.

SRK has received the Padma Shri. Aptly nicknamed "King Khan" for his virtual reign over Bollywood, he joined Hindi films in 1991 as a newcomer with an unruly mop of hair. Before that, he had been widely noticed in a popular tele-serial.

He subsequently made it big, venturing often into negative roles and pulling it off.

In the previous year, Khan boasted of three mega releases of which two, Main Hoon Na and Veer Zara , became big hits at the box office.

Chopra and Manna Dey both were named for the Padma Bhushan.

Chopra is perhaps the most respected of filmmakers, a weaver of magical love stories that span generations and geographical boundaries.

Since his first film in 1959, Chopra experimented with different genres relentlessly but never quite lost touch with the romantic in every soul.

Chopra is today considered the top of his group, the man with the Midas touch who can transform the most inane to something sublime.

The versatile Manna Dey's earthy voice rendered many a rousing patriotic song yet also tickled listeners with humour most unassuming.

Born Prabodh Chandra Dey, he nearly became a barrister before his famous singer uncle K.C. Dey took him under his wings.

When the senior Dey went to Mumbai to search for a break, Manna Dey followed him.

He became immensely popular with some signature songs but never quite made it to the top of the heap. In his own words, he never quite reached spectacular heights because he would not compromise with his style of singing.
