For decades Saroj Khan has made Indian film stars dance to her tune. But now Bollywood's leading choreographer is on the other side of the camera, playing a woman underworld chief in the film 'Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota' ('What If').
The Hindi-language movie marks the directorial debut of acclaimed actor Naseeruddin Shah and is being readied for release in cinemas across India.
Shah said he was on the lookout for a strong actor to play the role of a female mafia don, when he remembered Khan.
"When I wrote this role of a powerful woman who gets things done at the snap of her fingers, hers was the first face that came to mind," Shah was quoted as saying by an entertainment website.
"She has the look of one who has survived rough times and emerged triumphant," he said.
Khan, who excels in getting actors to gyrate to her steps, said she was nervous and jittery about facing the camera.
Khan said she told Shah he could replace her if he was not happy with her performance.
Khan has choreographed dances in more than 200 Hindi films.
