HOME | SCOOP!! & NEWS | HAPPENINGS IIFA : Bachchan, Prabhu flag off film festival16th June 2006 11.30 IST By Agencies Hindi film icon Amitabh Bachchan and South Indian star Prabhu on Thursday opened the seventh IIFA Weekend Film Festival in Dubai, saying there was need to promote cinema from all parts of India. "Contrary to popular opinion, the Hindi film industry is not the largest in the world, the Telugu film industry is," Bachchan, who is brand ambassador for the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA), said at the festival opening.
"Commercially and financially, the Tamil and Telugu film industries are far ahead of Hindi cinema, and I am delighted that IIFA is showcasing South Indian films and those from other Indian regions to show the true diversity of Indian cinema." Veteran Tamil film star Prabhu, who has performed in more than 100 movies so far, also thanked IIFA for extending a warm invitation to South Indian films. The actor-producer, who is appearing at the Festival alongside his hit Tamil film Chandramukhi , promised there would be more South Indian films in the next edition of IIFA. 'Chandramukhi' director P. Vasu was also present at the Festival inauguration. "We are delighted to be sitting here next to Amitabh Bachchan, and we are thankful for this opportunity to showcase Indian cinema together," he said. The three-day Film Festival is for the first time showcasing cinema from the regional Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam film industries within India in addition to the more internationally known popular Hindi films.
