Royal celebrations begin for Liz Hurley-Nayar wedding

Traditional folk songs and a cricket match enlivened Umaid Bhawan Palace as newly-wed Elizabeth Hurley and Arun Nayar arrived in Jodhpur Wednesday evening for their Indian- style wedding.

They arrived at the palace-turned-hotel from Mumbai with a battery of high-profile guests from Britain and India, including Hollywood stars and industrial bigwigs.

A delay by about seven hours in their arrival, however, changed their programme to hold a musical night at the 11th century Nagour Fort.

The mehendi ceremony was conducted shortly after their arrival here, with wet green henna paste used to create beautiful tattoos on Hurley's both hands.

Melodious folk songs sung for the occasion by local artistes created enthusiasm among the guests, especially those from Britain and Hollywood who had never experienced a north Indian wedding earlier.

A cricket match between Nayar XI and Hurley XI followed the mehendi ceremony on the lush green lawns around the palace.

The guests included Hollywood star David Furnish and Williams Aid, Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece and industrial icons Adi and Parmeshwari Godrej. The Godrejs had hosted a special party for the couple at Mumbai earlier.

The couple and guests arrived at Jodhpur airport in a chartered flight at around 5.45 p.m. Nayar and Hurley drove straight to the venue of the celebrations in a Bentley car.

Hurley wore an almond coloured sleeveless top and Nayar a kurta and a jeans. Hurley's four-year-old son Damien was also with them.

On Tuesday evening, a star-studded black tie event hosted by Parmeshwar Godrej in honour of Hurley and Nayar saw the who's who of Mumbai’s party circuit attending the bash held at her seaside bungalow.

A posse of media persons and curious onlookers crowded at the sprawling Godrej bungalow in suburban Juhu, hoping to catch a glimpse of British supermodel Hurley as well as other celebrities.

Among those who attended the event were UB Group chairman Vijay Mallya, cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan 's wife Gauri, industrialist Kumarmangalam Birla and actress Shilpa Shetty .

Hurley wore a white gown and the newly wedded couple was seeing dancing till the wee hours on the sprawling lawns of the bungalow.

The couple, who tied the knot in Britain on Saturday, arrived in Mumbai on Monday to kick off the second round of their elaborate wedding celebrations, which will culminate in a traditional Indian ceremony in Jodhpur.

The star-couple left for Jodhpur on Wednesday with some 150 guests.
