The Delhi High Court on Monday allowed director Ram Gopal Varma to release the remake of yesteryear's blockbuster Sholay by changing the title of the film from Ram Gopal Varma Ki Sholay to ‘Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag’.
Sascha Sippy, grandson of G.P. Sippy, the producer of the original Sholay in 1970s, had objected to the film’s modern day remake by Ramu.
Sascha Sippy, who claims to be the copyright holder of ‘Sholay’, accused Varma of infringing trademark on the title of the film and its popular character ‘Gabbar’ played by Amjad Khan.
Ramu, in his argument, has stated that his film is not a copy of the original ‘Sholay’.
Even the characters in Ramu’s movie have different names. Basanti is called Ghungru, Radha is called Durga and Gabbar Singh is called Babban Singh (played by Amitabh Bachchan ).
