Rajeev Khandelwal wants to do meaningful cinema

Rajeev Khandelwal says he chose Aamir as his debut movie because he wants to do meaningful cinema.

A mobile phone might have turned his life upside down in 'Aamir', but in real life Khandelwal is not terrified of attending phone calls.

"I'm not afraid of any calls in real life," he laughs. "Kyunki aadmi apni kismat khud likhta hai," he quickly adds a dialogue from his movie.

After popularity on small screen with his serials 'Kahin toh hoga' and 'Left Right Left', Khandelwal has made a successful leap to the 70mm screen with 'Aamir' where he plays the lead.

At a time when more and more Bollywood stars are turning to small screens, Khandelwal seems to have done a U-turn.

"I am not setting any trend. I am just doing something new that I always wanted to do" says the actor. However, he has not shut his doors for television serials. "If I get an exciting and challenging role that takes me forward, I would definitely do it," he says, adding he is fed up of saas-bahu sagas and routine roles on television.

'Aamir', which won accolades from all quarters for its unusual subject, gripping script and pace of the movie, is not a typical masala movie, feels Khandelwal. After all, who would choose his first movie on such experimental subject, without any actress, and with running time as short as one and a half hour. Then, why did he decide to do it?

"I want to do meaningful cinema. By doing this movie ('Aamir'), I had an opportunity to show that I can carry a film on my shoulders. And I think I proved myself," says actor.

However, he feels he would like to have both, commercial success as well as critical acclaim, in his career as movie like 'Aamir' cannot be made everytime.

He says he has a lot of scripts at home but he is not on a signing spree. "My next movie is Peter Gaya Kaam Se with UTV. I have not signed any other movie and I am looking forward to good scripts". The actor is hopeful that he will work with his favourite director Yash Chopra some day.

He has also found a new admirer in Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dixit. "I met her, when I was in Delhi recently. She appreciated my work in 'Aamir'".
