Album Review
Foot-Savvy
By Nikhil Kumar

When Himesh Reshammiya happens to be the music director of an album, we already know what kind of melodies to expect. But, willy-nilly, we have to give it to the man for coming up with tunes that are addictive and foot-savvy.

After showing his musical prowess in the last year’s Aashiq Banaya Aapne, whose music did much better than the movie itself, Reshammiya now returns with yet another ear-catchy score in Anant Mahadevan’s movie Aksar , starring Emraan Hashmi , Udita Goswami and Dino Morea in the lead roles.

Song Jhalak Dikhlaja, Aaja Aaja has already become the signature tune of the movie. The very opening riff of the song, with a shrill saxophone-like tune (probably created on a keyboard), sets the mood for the entire album. Reshammiya’s nasal and spirited rendition of this number is quite infectious and the melody stays with you whether you like it or not.

Two more versions of the same song appear in the album.
The remix version by DJ Akbar Sami is a tad heavy on the ears. The unplugged version, with a few instruments and a haunting Tabla accompaniment, is mellow and much better than the remix one.

We get to hear a gentler side of Reshammiya, the singer, in Laagi Prem Dhun Laagi, a relatively slow paced duet with Sunidhi Chauhan. It is a romantic number with lyrics that carry a slight touch of Sufi poetry.

The remix version of this song is heavy on bass and beats.

Dance numbers are the forte of Reshammiya and he shows this in Mohabbat Ke a fast paced song with a punchy beat. The song, sung by Reshammiya and newcomer Tulsi, is a full-fledged dance track with a fine musical arrangement.

Its remix (by Sami) is definitely an elevated version.

The album steers off from the dance track and gets into mushy mood with Soniye, sung by K K and Sunidhi Chauhan. Lyrics by Samir are quite staid and romantically fluffy. Sunidhi sings her passage in English.

The remix version of the song (by Akbar Sami) is a forced attempt to make a mellow number into a peppy track.

Kunal Ganjawala sings Loot Jayenge, a rhythmic, romantic number with Jayesh Gandhi singing a few phrases in between. Its remix, although unimaginative, still peps the song.

‘Aksar Theme’ is mellow but has a strong déjà vu feel that makes you doubt its melodic originality. Still, the track contains moods. It begins on a slow note and gradually picks up. The piano accompaniment in the background gives the number a gentle, haunting feel.

To sum it up, Aksar’s music undoubtedly has an appeal. The album is more skewed towards peppy dance tracks with some notable singing from the composer himself.
