Album Review
Forgettable Music
By N K Deoshi

Much like the title of this Raj Kanwar directed movie, its music is unimaginative, soppy and simply forgettable after a single hearing.

The movie, starring Akshay Kumar , Katrina Kaif and Bipasha Basu , looks like one of those mushy melodramas full of fluffy romance and tear-jerking situations that entail songs with lovey-dovey and rona dhona flavour.

This is where music director Anu Malik steps in with his musical compositions set to the words of Sameer.

After hearing the songs of ‘Humko Deewana Kar Gaye’, it appears that Malik recycled his unreleased compositions from the 1990s and spruced them up with musical arrangement et al. The album is like old rum in a new, unattractive bottle.

Romantic schmaltz is hurled at a listener in the very first number, title song ‘Humko Deewana Kar Gaye’ that reminds you of the mellow sentimentality of Anuradha Paudwal numbers from the early nineties. An outdated conventional track, this number is sung by Sonu Nigam and new singer Tulsi Kumar.

As if one track was not enough, the album has three more different versions of the title number placed evenly throughout the album to nag you till the very end.

A sad version is quite obvious. But the pretentious tremolo in Sonu Nigam’s rendition and the crescendo at the end of this version (with loud drums and signature tune) punctures the emotive appeal of this number.

Then comes a short version titled Humko Begaana Kar Gaye. The fourth and thankfully the last version is again a sad track sung by Tulsi Kumar.

After this initial musical assault, the album then tries to gear into ‘entertaining’ mode with Fanaah, which is plain in melody and lyrically tepid. Sung by Kay Kay and Anu Malik, Fanaah is fast but melodically flat and forgettable.

DJ Akbar Sami tries to add some zing in this song’s remix version, but what can a remixer do if the original composition happens to be plain mediocre.

Bhula Denge Tumko Sanam is a song for the broken hearted. As its title suggests, this is a song about a man trying to forget the woman who broke his heart. Despite Sonu Nigam’s credible singing, this number fails to stir any emotion at all.

Perhaps to fill some space in the album, there is even a frothy version of this sad number. The fast remix, with musical arrangement by Jatin Sharma, flips the composition downside up.

‘For Your Eyes Only’ comes as a welcome respite in this album of plain melodies. This peppy dance number is sung by Sonu Nigam. Its remix by Jatin Sharma doesn’t disappoint either.

‘Rock Star’ is like a mishmash of rock, pop and bhangra. Although a foot-tapping number, the song lacks a hummable melody.

Alka Yagnik-sung Dekhte Dekhte elicits a broad yawn. This romantic track gives a déjà vu feeling that Anu Malik has once again pilfered a tune from some old composition.

Mere Saath Chalte Chalte is an attempted qawwali with melodic variations that fail to infuse any power into its music. Krishna, Sunidhi Chauhan and Shaan sing this gaudy, mediocre composition by Anu Malik.

In short, the songs of ‘Humko Deewana Kar Gaye’ are not just out of sync with the present musical trends, they are overtly sugary, sad and sleep inducing.
