Album Review
By Nikhil Kumar

May be it is a sheer coincidence, but films starring Emraan Hashmi usually turn out with good music scores. Murder , Aashiq Banaya Aapne , Zeher and Aksar – all had something new and unique about their music. And so can be said of the forthcoming Hashmi starrer Gangster .

Produced by Mukesh Bhatt and directed by Anurag Basu, ‘Gangster’ introduces new girl Kangna Ranaut . Emraan Hashmi and Shiney Ahuja are the male leads. The film has been shot in Seoul, South Korea and is slated to release by April end.

The music of the film is composed by Pritam, while the lyrics have been written by Sayeed Qadri, Mayur and Neelesh Misra.

The most outstanding composition of the album comes at the very beginning. Not only is Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai written beautifully by Sayeed Qadri, the song has a melody and rhythm that strikes an immediate chord in your head. KK shows verve and flexibility in his vocal rendition of the song.

Two remix versions of the song also appear in the album. The ‘Euro Mix’ by Bunty Rajput is more techno, while Jatin Sharma's peppered remix version has a zingy touch.

Bheegi Bheegi is Pritam’s adaptation of Bengali rocker Gautam Chatterjee's number 'Prithvi'. The song introduces Bangladeshi singer James, who impresses with his emotive voice modulation and highly expressive singing. The song, a soft rock number, has some really good lyrics by Mayur.

Lamha Lamha is a soft romantic song replete with lilting musical sounds that caress your ears. Neelesh Mishra’s lyrics have a slight pretension of poetry, while singer Abhijit’s singing is too fluffy and sugary. The mushiness in the song becomes a bit overbearing after a while.

This song is also repeated as a duet with Sunidhi Chauhan joining Abhijit on the mike.

The album then steers into punchy mood with the racy dance track Ya Ali. The song, basically a fast techno-fusion romantic track, introduces Assamese singer Zubeen, who makes a notable debut with his singing full of spirit and gusto. The song’s words are written by Sayeed Qadri.

Mujhe Mat Roko is a slow, sad number sung from the perspective of a woman in pain and distress. Kavita Seth does a fine job singing this song in her husky and slightly tremulous vocals. Composer Pritam has given a semi-classical touch to the music of this song.

On the whole, the songs of ‘Gangster’ are at par with the musical standards of successful albums in the recent past. The rhythm, melody and musical arrangement in the songs are finely enmeshed with some thought-provoking lyrics.
