Funky Music

Not only is Farhan Akhtar’s movie Don a modern remake of Chandra Barot’s film of the same title from 1978, its music too to very funky, snazzy and in keeping with the tastes of music buffs.

If we toss aside the inevitable comparison between the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (SEL) compositions with those of Kalyanji Anandji in Don (1978) , the music of ‘Don’ does turn out to be charming and addictive score with an eclectic mix of techno, rave and pop. Javed Akhtar’s lyrics fuse together the old-world charm with the contemporary sensibilities.

To start with, SEL choose not to rip off the original number Main Hoon Don but come up with their own version of the title song. The song’s melody and its musical arrangement are certainly catchy to the ears. Shaan’s singing is appreciable and the background chorus adds a somewhat surreal feel to this composition.

The remix version further peps up this track with more techno additions.

Yeh Mera Dil is the rehashed, renovated version of the same song from the original movie. While melody remains the same, the number, sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, is dense with heavy beats and bass drone. This song needs some repeated hearings to take a liking to.

One song open to critical scrutiny in this album is Khaike Paan Banaras Wala. The punch and fervour of the original song by the inimitable Kishore Kumar is almost impossible to match. For the purists, Udit Narayan somehow manages to make the song audible. But it is not a patch on the original. SEL take the basic melody and do some improvisations in the modern version of the song. There is an orchestra interlude followed by a rendition of few lines by Shahrukh Khan .

Mourya Re is a musical panegyric to Lord Ganesha. The number, sung by Shankar Mahadevan, has a raw power although its melody is not really so catchy. The music is very Indian with the use of Dhols etc. Words by Javed Akhtar capture the essence of the song well.

Aaj Ki Raat is one of the most outstanding songs, if not the best composition, in the album. The song catches your fancy in the very first hearing. Alisha Chinai, Mahalaxmi Iyer and Sonu Nigam do credible job behind the microphones. The song has a somewhat haunting, suspenseful feel to it. Its music has nostalgia of vintage swing, cabaret tracks.

Now, over to the remixes. The ‘Don Revisited’ and ‘Don Theme’ are racy, pumped up remixes. SRK’s dialogues in the remixes add an extra punch, but it must be said that SRK delivers the lines like Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahin, namumkin hai with an intensity that sounds more affected and less real.

Overall, the music of 'Don – The Chase Begins Again' is worth taking notice of.
