Lakshya - Review - Songs - News
View the Lakshya picture gallery Read the Lakshya movie review Album Review By ApunKaChoice Bureau The music of Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta starrer Lakshya is a mix of songs of youth, love, separation and patriotism. But there is hardly any number (except one) that delights an appreciator of good music. The movie, directed by Farhaan Akhtar, has music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy and lyrics by Javed Akhtar, Farhaan’s father. The title song ‘Lakshya’ starts with the sound of a hovering chopper and then gets in the mould of a motivational song for the training commandoes. The song, rendered by Shankar Mahadevan, has an overuse of electric guitar and heavy drum beats. The song is supposed to be an anthem for the soldiers but turns out to be more of a rock anthem. The opening song Main Aisa Kyon Hoon is a little better in terms of composition. The song, composed in the style of a medium paced dance number, reflects the confusion of a young boy regarding his identity. Singer Shaan brings about the right emotive intonations to justify the lyrics about a young man who can’t reasonably explain his own behavior. The song, shot on Hrithik Roshan, shows the actor dancing to Prabhu Deva’s ‘free-flowing’ dance steps on a stage. Then comes the romantic number Agar Main Kahoon, which is more of a melodic conversation between two characters in love with each other. This song undoubtedly is the best composition in the album. The mellifluously reverberating guitar notes in the background, accompanied by lilting music, and soulful singing by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik, makes the song delightful to one’s ears. The album then nudges into a somber mood with Kitni Baatein, with Hariharan showing his vocal talent in a naturally restricted way. Along with Sadhna Sargam, the singer is able to create a sad mood, without going overboard and making it mushy or weepy. The song is written to the situation of separation between two loved ones and the small things that bind them close to each other. The album has one more patriotic song Kandhon Se Milte Hain Kandhe which is about the unity and love for one’s motherland. The song features a number of male singers –Shankar Mahadevan, Sonu Nigam, Hariharan, Roop Kumar Rathod, Kunal Ganjawala and Vijay Prakash. It is essentially a desh bhakti song composed in a modern style with ample use of techno gadgets. In the end come two instrumental numbers 'Separation' – a short, one-track musical piece full of sounds that arouse sadness and longing. The second one, ‘Victory’ is loud with extensive use of various instruments. In a nutshell, the music of Lakshya is uninspiring and quite drab. The most odd thing about the album is the incorporation of modern sounds of electric guitar, drums and synthesizers in the patriotic songs, which essentially demand the use of desi instruments to arouse the feeling of desh bhakti.
