Chandrachur Singh: Down but not out

It has been five years since Chandrachur Singh stepped in the arc lights of Bollywood. His debut film ‘Maachis’, directed by Gulzar, established his image as a serious and talented actor and also won him many acclamations.

Back then, many people saw in him the star of the future and invested their hopes in him. However, such hopes and expectations haven’t materialized as yet. Today Chandrachur is labeled as a star that simply failed to shine.

It is not that he has not been given the opportunities. As a newcomer, he was lucky to get a meaty role in ABCL’s ‘Tere Mere Sapne’. But, to his ill luck, the movie failed to click at the box office. He did a series of inconsequential films like ‘Shyam Ghanshyam’, ‘Betaabi’ and ‘Silsila Hai Pyar Ka’, which also bombed at the box-office and gradually his co-stars and newcomers overtook him.

Today this talented actor is deemed by Bollywood filmmakers as good only for supporting or sideroles in the films. At least this is the impression we get if we consider his latest releases. In the surprise box-office hit ‘Kya Kehna’, Chandrachur’s role has been appreciated but the film is an all to all Preity Zinta film, wholly centered on her.

It is the case with Mansoor Khan directed ‘Josh’, in which Chandrachur is paired with Bollywood sensation Aishwarya Rai. But despite having a meaty role, it is Shahrukh and Aishwarya who steal the thunder.

Chandrachud, however seems to be indifferent. What matters to him is perhaps the quality of a role rather than its length and proportion in a film. “I have been waiting for good roles to come by,” says Chandrachur, “and offers are under consideration.

Despite being on the sidelines, Chandrachur still retains the vigor and dedication of a newcomer. All he needs is a few good quality roles to prove his mettle as an actor. Today, he may be down, but he is not out yet. The best of him is still to come.
