Actor-turned-director Amol Palekar’s latest film Anaahat explores the issue of female sexuality in a very subtle way without going into obscenity, movie’s lead actress Sonali Bendre has said.

The movie, based on Surendra Verma's play Surya Kee Antim Kiran Se Surya Kee Pehli Kiran Tak, is being screened at the ongoing International Film Festival of India.

A period drama set in 10th century India, the film has Sonali playing a queen whose husband king is impotent. So to conceive a child for the kingdom, she is asked by the lawmakers of her kingdom, to go for Niyog, a ritual wherein the queen chooses a mate for a night to give the kingdom an heir.

About her role in the movie Sonali says that is a daring role about a woman who chooses to decide her own future rather than let her life be dictated by others.

“What is interesting about the role is that after Niyog the queen decides to continue her relationship with the other man. At the same time she doesn’t get aggressive towards those who are against her wish. But she retains her femininity throughout and at the same
time defies the set norms that a woman cannot chose her mate more than once. The movie explores female sexuality in a subtle way without going into obscenity,” said the actress who is currently in Delhi for the Film Festival.
