Many would say that a widow's role in Chokher Bali does not befit a gorgeous actress like Aishwarya Rai. But such opinions will change after seeing the movie.
Directed by Rituparno Ghosh, Chokher Bali is based upon Rabindranath Tagore's famous novel of the same title.
The movie has Ash playing a young widow named Binodini. While the character of a widow might seem a bit bland for actress like Ash at first glance, but there is more to it than meets the eye at first.
For the movie has Ash playing a subtle temptress who uses her beauty and charms to entice men. Ash plays a character caught between her widowhood and her desires most of which have sexual connotations.
The first man Ash entices in the movie is her friend Ashalata's (Raima Sen's) husband Mahendra. After having had a hot relationship with Mahendra she moves onto his best friend Behari.
After the screening of Chokher Bali at the recently held 34th International Film Festival of India, Ash said working with Rituparno on such an interesting subject as a Tagore work was a learning experience for her.
However, the actress did regret her linguistic shortcomings and also rued the fact that she herself could not dub for the movie.
