Cliched Bollywood roles no longer enthuse Sonali Bendre . The svelte belle is now digging only ‘sensible stuff’ that can test her acting abilities.
Much has changed for Sonali since last one year. She got married to filmmaker Goldie Behl and disappeared from the movie scene except in cameo performance that mostly went unnoticed.
In the meanwhile, the best thing that happened to her from acting point of view was Amol Palekar’s period drama Anaahat that matured Sonali as an actress.
In the movie, she plays the queen whose husband, the king, is an impotent man who cannot conceive. So she is forced into a night of Niyog (sleeping with another man to conceive). But things get murky after she decides to assert her sexuality and to continue her Niyog willingly against the wishes of the male-dominated Senate of the king.
Sonali says that Palekar’s movie helped discover many hidden aspects of the actress inside her. Now she would prefer to act in such movies rather than doing those typical candyfloss roles that contain little substance.
However, that doesn’t mean that she has closed her options for mainstream roles.
“Whenever some good offer comes, I am ready to clinch it,” says the Marathi beauty.
