Bachchan’s tribute to Nirupa Roy

Nirupa Roy, who passed away on Wednesday, was undoubtedly Bollywood’s most famous mother. After all, if you play the mother of the biggest superstar, you have to be famous. And Amitabh Bachchan pays tribute to the veteran actress.

Bachchan recalls his long association with Hindi cinema's most beloved mother with fondness. He says that working with Nirupaji was such fun. She was a warm and affectionate lady. She played his mother so often that they had actually begun to feel as though they were related.

Bachchan says that over the years, he realised that the role Nirupa Roy played of his mother on screen had actually transcended off-screen too.

Bachchan says that it was the same motherly warmth that she exuded towards him on screen that she exuded in real life as well. She was exceedingly fond of him and so was he of her. He would touch her feet like he touched his mother’s. And the friendship and bond that developed were overwhelming.

Nirupa Roy’s films with Bachchan were ‘Khoon Pasina’, ‘Deewar’, Amar Akbar Anthony , ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’, ‘Suhaag’, ‘Ganga Jamuna Saraswati’, ‘Mard’ and ‘Lal Baadshah’.

Bachchan adds that during the shooting of ‘Lal Baadshah’ he perceived that she was going through a rough patch in her life. She later met and confided her problems in him, just as a mother talks to her son. He was glad that — albeit in a very small way — he was able to help her out.

In a sad mood Bachchan says that now when Nirupa Roy is no more, he feels like he has lost a mother, a person he felt very close to.

Not surprisingly, Shahi Kapoor admits that most famous line he said in his acting career was: Mere paas Maa hai.
