SCOOP!! & NEWS ‘Raincoat’ mesmerizes25th Dec 2004 1.21 IST By Aparajita Ghosh An evening’s encounter between two estranged lovers who pretend to each other ‘how fine life has turned out’, even as they keep repressing their dormant and smoldering love – Rituparno Ghosh’s ‘ Raincoat ’ is a simple and sensitive tale of how love stories usually end in real life. Aishwarya Rai and Ajay Devgan come together on screen for the fourth time for Rituparno Ghosh ’s first Hindi film ‘Raincoat’.
Rituparno has earlier made a Bengali film titled Titli which was also based on an evening encounter between estranged lovers. ‘Raincoat’ begins with Manoj (Ajay Devgan) leaving his mother in countryside to travel to Kolkata in search of better prospects of business. He also harbors a bleak hope of meeting his estranged beloved Niru (Ash), who is now married to someone else. On a rainy day in Kolkata, Manoj borrows his friend’s old raincoat as he sets out to meet Niru. What follows is a nostalgic and emotion-filled encounter between the two, set in a dimly lit room. ‘Raincoat’ is a finely written story replete with thought-provoking dialogues and silences that are pregnant with meaning. Rituparno has kept many things open-ended in the movie and instead of tying the story in a neat knot he has kept things unsaid and open for the interpretation of the viewers. Above all, the film has excellent performances from both Ash and Ajay. The movie was shot in 25 days in Kolkata and is set mostly in an apartment.
