SCOOP!! & NEWS Kisna impresses21st Jan 2005 22.40 IST By Nitika Desai Subhash Ghai’s movie Kisna is a well-crafted movie that tells a gripping story, tugs a few strings at your heart, makes you smile and cry, and then leaves you with a sweet-n-sad feeling in the end. The story of Kisna is set in the tumultuous times of 1940s in India when the nationalists rose up against the British, demanding Independence for their motherland. 
The film tells the tale of a young Indian, Kisna ( Vivek Oberoi ), who saves a British girl, Katherine ( Antonia Bernath ), from an enraged mob of nationalists that includes his own uncle and brother. Katherine is the young daughter of a ruthless British collector. That is why she has become the target of furious nationalists. Kisna decides to protect Katherine and escort her to the safety of the British High Commission in New Delhi, from where she can be sent back to her home in Britain. While traveling together through the heartland of India, a tender attraction develops between Kisna and Katherine. But Kisna is engaged to get married to an Indian girl Luxmi ( Isha Sharvani ). What course the love between Kisna and Katherine takes and what happens to Luxmi, forms the crux of the remaining story. Kisna is not without the grandiose cinematic style typical of Subhash Ghai . Ashok Mehta’s cinematography binds a viewer to the screen while Rahman and Ismail Darbar’s music act as delectable embellishments to the story written by as many as four writers, including Ghai himself. Isha Sharvani’s acrobatic dances leave the audience with their mouths gaped in disbelieve, but it is the fair lady, Antonia Bernath, who emerges as the true star of Kisna with her highly credible performance. Antonia brings out a calculated balance of realism and Bollywoodish melodrama in her portrayal of Katherine.
