Filmmaker Mira Nair seems to have finally found the actress who will play the key female protagonist in her movie ‘The Namesake’.
Nair had first signed Rani Mukherjee to play the role of Ashima Ganguly in her movie which is based on the famous novel of the same title by Pulitzer winner Jhumpa Lahiri. However, Rani could not commit to the project due to date problems and was replaced with Bengali belle Konkana Sen .
But now even Konkana has been dropped from the project because she is committed to her mother Aparna Sen’s movie ‘15 Park Avenue’.
Konkana’s place has now been taken by Tabu , who has just returned after a year’s break from Bollywood.
Adapted from the novel to screen by Sooni Taraporevala, ‘The Namesake’ tells the story of Gogol, the son of immigrants from India.
Born and brought up in America, Gogol (named after the Russian author) wants to fit within contemporary New York society, but his parents are unable to let go of their roots and their conservative customs and traditions.
Tabu plays Gogol’s mother Ashima in the film. Abhishek Bachchan is likely to play the character of Gogol. Irfaan Khan will play Tabu’s husband Ashoke Ganguly.
Shooting for ‘The Namesake’ will begin in New York at the end of March followed by schedules in Kolkata by mid-May.
Tabu also plays the female-lead in Zoya Akhtar’s debut, ‘Luck By Chance’, which is co-produced by Mira Nair.
