Main Aisa Hi Hoon – Disappointing!

Main Aisa Hi Hoon tells the story of a mentally retarded father who fights a legal case to retain the custody of his seven-year-old daughter.

The film, starring Ajay Devgan , Esha Deol , Sushmita Sen and baby Rucha Vaidya, is the Indianized remake of the Hollywood movie ‘I Am Sam’ that starred Sean Penn and Michelle Pfeiffer.

The film tells the story of Neel (Ajay), a grown up man who has the brain of a child. He falls in love with a girl named Maya (Esha) who walks out on him after the birth of their daughter. Neel raises his daughter Gungun on his own. But then, on her seventh birthday, Maya’s father comes to claim Gungun’s custody. The case for the girl’s custody is fought in the court. Sushmita Sen plays the lawyer Neeti who fights Neel’s case.

Main Aisa Hi Hoon could have been a better film than it turned out. The father-daughter relationship that might have been the emotional dynamo of this flick is plainly treated and hardly plucks any strings at heart.

Add to this the inaptly written dialogues and a barrage of songs that are absolutely unnecessary. And the courtroom scenes that could have been the backbone of the film’s second’s half, simply lack vigor and emotion.

Ajay, who is one of the finest talents of our industry, proves there is one role he can’t play. His portrayal of a mentally abnormal man borders on buffoonery and hardly arouses any sympathy (or even empathy) in the mind of viewers. The acting of a retarded man doesn’t come naturally to him.

Sushmita Sen excels in her role of a neglectful mother who, quite ironically, fights Neel’s case in the court. Baby Rucha Vaidya suits Gungun’s role perfectly.
