The first six months of 2005 have seen some exceptional movies coming out from Bollywood.

This year has so far been unexpectedly good for Bollywood. An industry that is going through a transition phase in which filmmakers are daring to be different and try hitherto untouched subjects, Bollywood has set new milestones with films that defy stereotypes and blend quality and entertainment in innovative ways.

Although the year began on a disappointing note with a string of flops like Rog , Insaan and Kisna , Madhur Bhandarkar's Page 3 emerged as the first successful movie of 2005 despite its offbeat theme. The movie, a celluloid expos of the elite, garnered unexpectedly good response from the movie buffs.

And in the following month of February came Sanjay Leela Bhansali's masterpiece Black , the story of a blind-deaf-mute girl and her teacher. Besides being a crowd puller, the movie showcased the immense acting talent of Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee . Amitabh himself considers his performance in the movie as his best till date.

The next months were dotted with average grosser like Lucky - No Time For Love , Waqt - A Race Against Time and Kaal . There were also unexpected duds like Shabd , Karam , Nazar , Mumbai Xpress , Jo Bole So Nihaal and the recently released Bachke Rehna Re Baba .

There were also films that did not fare well at the box-office but got good critical reviews. Films like My Brother Nikhil , Naina , Silsiilay and D are pieces of sensible cinema that don't pander to the popular stereotypes.

The months of May-June saw a slew of excellent films that bear testimony to the fact that certain filmmakers are determined to break the shackles of the past and try something artistically different on screen.

Shaad Ali's Bunty Aur Babli may not be labeled as a hit back home, but the movie is really raking it in at the box-office abroad. The halcyon days of Bengal were revisited in Pradeep Sarkar's adaptation of Sarat Chandra's story in Parineeta that introduced Vidya Balan , who has won immense praise for her talent and natural beauty.

At the fag end of the first six months of 2005 came Shah Rukh Khan 's Paheli , which is proving to be a hit at the box-office at home and abroad. The movie, based on a folktale, is directed by National Award winning director Amol Palekar.

Looking ahead, the coming weeks seem no less promising. On the anvil is Ram Gopal Varma's much-awaited Sarkar , which has Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan playing father-son on screen for the first time.

No doubt, the first six months have sated a movie lover's appetite for good cinema. And the best part is that the coming months have no less to offer.
