It won’t be an understatement to say that trouble and Salman Khan have most of the times accompanied each other.

First the black buck hunting case, then the run over case by his vehicle and now his alleged links with the underworld, trouble never seems to be far from Salman.

And now Salman seems to be in more trouble as the Bollywood-underworld nexus came to the fore on Thursday once again with the media carrying audiotapes of a conversation purportedly between Salman and Aishwarya Rai in which he flaunted his links with dons like Dawood Ibrahim prompting Maharashtra government to order an inquiry.

It is still not clear who recorded the conversation that apparently took place in 2001 with Mumbai Police chief A N Roy saying he was not sure if it was one of the police interceptions.

"We are verifying the conversation and examining the past record if any action has been taken on the issue," Roy told newsmen in Mumbai.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh told the Assembly that an inquiry would be conducted into the allegations that Salman had threatened Aishwarya with "dire consequences" if she failed to attend specific events linked to the underworld.

The Opposition BJP raised the issue in the Assembly with its leader Gopinath Munde demanding that Khan be booked under MCOCA for his alleged links with the underworld.

The tapes of the telephonic conversation, whose transcripts first appeared in a local newspaper and played by television channels, carried a voice allegedly that of an inebriated Salman intimidating and abusing Aishwarya to perform at an entertainment programme organised by fugitive gangster Abu Salem.

Salman also reportedly boasted his links with underworld figures Dawood Ibrahim, Chota Shakeel and Guru Satam, and threatened Aishwarya that they would eliminate the actress and her family if he desired so. He also said he had advance information about the 1993 Mumbai blasts.

The BJP on Thursday demanded action against Salman if the allegations of his links with the underworld were true.

"If true it is a very serious issue and howsoever big, no artist is greater than the law. The Government should take action against him if the allegations are found to be true", party spokesman Prakash Javadekar told reporters in New Delhi.

Both Salman and Aishwarya were incommunicado throughout the day although the actor's counsel Deepesh Mehta said that the tapes were "false and fabricated."

Mehta said "it (tapes) cannot be true because if the police had the cassette four years ago, they would have taken action against Salman then."

"This is an attempt by media to sensationalise and the voice in the cassette is certainly not of Salman Khan," the counsel said adding the actor might contemplate legal action on this issue.

Aishwarya’s secretary Hari Singh said, "You will get her reaction later".

DCP Dhananjay Kamalakar of Mumbai Crime Branch said, "We believe the tapes to be of the period when film producer Bharat Shah was booked for alleged links with the underworld, and we are checking the records."

Police said that at the time when the charges of film producer Bharat Shah's alleged underworld links were being probed, Crime Branch had recorded a number of conversations between Bollywood stars with the underworld figures.
