Deoshi Some viewers are labeling the multi-crore film as India’s next bet for an Oscar. Others are simply trashing it as a hyped movie that lacks the fervor expected from the story of India’s first revolutionary Mangal Pandey. Aamir Khan ’s latest movie The Rising is getting mixed reactions from the audience. On its third day in the running, the movie has gone down well with a few, while others say they were completely disappointed by the film. 
Sandhya Agarwal, a film student and an aspiring short-filmmaker, said the movie did not focus much on Mangal Pandey. “Aamir’s character of Mangal Pandey was pushed to the sidelines in the second half and only in the last 20 minutes we see him raising arms against the British. I think Mr. Ketan Mehta (the director) has tried to pack in too much material in just one movie and thereby Mangal Pandey, the character, gets diffused,” she said. Sharing this opinion is another movie buff, Vikas Juneja, a Delhiite who saw the movie on the first day. “My jaw was dropped throughout the major part of the movie. I think some songs in the movie were unnecessary. And the climax of the movie, when Pandey is hung, lacked any impact. The song ‘Mangal Mangal’ that comes when Pandey is led to the gallows is oddly placed. And even after the hanging, the director gives the audience no moments to absorb the martyrdom of Pandey and the movie again breaks into the same song showing the rising against the British,” says Juneja. However, some good reactions to the movie were also forthcoming. Ritu Mehta, a housewife, said she liked the movie immensely. “I loved Aamir’s acting. Although Rani Mukherjee and Amisha Patel had minor roles, the two ladies still get noticed,” said Ms. Mehta.
