Amitabh BachchanAmitabh Bachchan: Grace and humility personified
11th Oct 2005  22.30 IST

As Amitabh Bachchan completes yet another year of his long and celebrated life, the superstar personifies a man of talent, grace and humility.

Bachchan has cancelled the celebrations for his 64th birthday on Tuesday, because he sees it unfitting to celebrate when a natural calamity has struck South Asia and claimed many lives just a few days back.

Even though there were no celebrations, there could be no stopping for his fans who started gathering outside his Juhu-based residences 'Jalsa' and 'Pratiksha' since morning. Some came from as far as Delhi.

Bachchan did not disappoint his fans. He went out to meet them and express gratitude for their love and support through the highs and lows in his life.

"What I am today is because of your love and respect," he told them. Such is the humility of this man who is idolized by millions.

When asked what he wished for on his birthday, Bachchan said he wished good health for his family and himself and he hoped to do good work in future.

Bachchan spent the day doing what he normally does - that is work, work and some more work. Even at 63, the superstar works no less than the people half his age. He has just returned from Rajasthan after shooting very long schedules of Vidhu Vinod Chopra's movie Eklavya in which he is playing the title role. And now he is ready to fly to the US to shoot for Karan Johar's movie Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna.

But Bachchan's hardworking nature comes as no surprise if we look at his initial struggling days to his rise to stardom. A man who was rejected the job of an announcer at the All India Radio, Bachchan came to Mumbai in 1968 with literally no support and spent many nights sleeping on a bench.

Then he got a small break in 1969 in a movie called Saat Hindustani. He was initially rejected by many because of his tall and thin stature and brooding persona. But perseverance was in Bachchan's blood. He struggled and came to notice with the role of an angry young man in Zanjeer .

And then there was no looking back. A slew of films of the same ilk - Deewar, Shakti , Lawaris, Sholay , etc - got him the tag of Bollywood's angry young man. On the other hand, there were films like Chupke Chupke, Abhimaan, Anand and Mili that stood testimony to the immense talent that this angry man contained within him.

Today, Amitabh Bachchan is undoubtedly the most famous name both on television and the big screen. It has been a long and arduous journey. And we hope that there are many more years for him to live and many more milestones yet to achieve.

We wish this towering and humble personality a heartfelt happy birthday and a long, prosperous life.
