'Devaki', a bilingual movie depicting the ignominious status of women in the Indian society will be released in theatres globally in January next year.

Based on a real-life incident, the movie, directed by Bappaditya Bandopadhyay, made both in Hindi and English, showcases the lives of two women coming from strikingly different backgrounds, and seeks to show that irrespective of social conditions, literacy levels and economic status, women are still treated as "commodity" in Indian society.

While the portions depicting the rural backdrop are in Hindi with English sub-titles, the story track with urban backdrop is in English with Hindi sub-titles.

Starring Bollywood actor Suman Ranganathan in the title role and Perizaad Zorabian as the other protagonist, Devaki had its world premiere at the Osian Cinefan Asian Film Festival in July this year.

Since then it has travelled to Montreal Fest, Tamecula International Film Festival in California, Idaho International Film Festival in US and Rio De Janeiro International Film Festival in Brazil. It was also nominated for the best feature film at Sao Paulo International Film Festival in Brazil, Ashville International Film Festival and Global Knight Malta International Film Festival in US.

After having participated in nine major international film festivals, 'Devaki' is now heading for the Florida Global Peace Film Festival.

Bandopadhyay said the film was based on a real-life incident where a tribal woman named Devaki was sold for Rs 5,000 in an open auction in Pandhana, a sub-division of Khandwa district in Madhya Pradesh, on January 4, 2003. Devaki and other girls of the Bhil tribe were put up for sale at a function attended by a minister. This was the cover story of The Week magazine, the film's director said and added that this incident inspired him to depict the story on screen.
