Contrary to popular belief, the Perizaad Zorabian - Shabana Azmi film Morning Raga has not been nominated for Oscar awards.

Scotching reports that his film had secured an Oscar nomination, playwright and filmmaker Mahesh Dattani has said the film had been merely submitted for consideration in the mainstream awards category of the annual Academy Awards.

"There is a lot of misinformation going on that it has been nominated for the Oscars. It hasn't," the Mumbai-based Dattani said in New Delhi. "The submission has been accepted by the Academy and it is among the 300-odd films whose applications meet the criteria."

Interestingly, ‘Morning Raga’ would not be crossing swords with Amol Palekar 's Paheli -- India's official nominee in the Best Foreign Language Film category -- but has the unenviable task of taking on Hollywood biggies to secure a nomination in the Oscar 'Best Picture' category.

The film would also be trying its luck in categories like Best Actress, Best Music and Best Director.

The nominations for the 78th edition of the Academy Awards are scheduled to be announced on January 31 this year.

The 5798 nomination ballots are currently with members of the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and they hold the key to the films, which will walk away with the honours at the official awards ceremony on March 5, 2006.

The critically acclaimed ‘Morning Raga’, depicts the coming together of the modern and traditional forms of music.

However, the film lost out to ‘Paheli’ -- Palekar's saga of a ghost who falls in love with a Rajasthani bride -- as India's official nomination for the Oscars.
