'Rang De Basanti' comes under scissors

Finally, the controversy surrounding Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra ’s movie Rang De Basanti has cleared. The movie will release on January 26, but after the deletion of a horse race sequence in it.

In a press conference held in Mumbai on Monday, the movie’s director, Mehra, and producer Ronnie Screwala, said a small 20-second portion of the movie would be deleted in response to suggestions made by the Animal Welfare Board.

“The Animal Welfare Board has given a recommendation that a shot involving a banned horse race be removed from the final version…The shot in question is a traditional festival of the Nihangs, a sect of Sikhism, which features a horse race that has been banned. The shot is not more than 20 seconds,” producer Ronnie Screwala of UTV said in the press conference.

On the previous controversy involving the Defence Ministry, the producer said no cuts were asked either by the Censor Board or the Defence Ministry.

“The media has made an issue out of a non-issue. The simple fact is that neither the Censor Board nor the Ministry of Defence has requested any cuts in the movie,” said Screwala.

The producer added that the horse race sequence too was deleted not because there was any cruelty to animals shown in that portion.

“It is more a question of procedure, wherein we had to pre-apply before shooting the scene which we had not done,” Screwala said.

‘Rang De Basanti’ was previously slated to hit the theatres on January 20. Now, the movie has been postponed by a week and will release on January 26, the Indian Republic Day.

‘Rang De Basanti’ is a youth flick with a message. The movie stars Aamir Khan , British actress Alice Patten , Madhavan , Soha Ali Khan , Kunal Kapoor , Siddharth , Sharman Joshi , Atul Kulkarni and Kiron Kher .
