Banaras - A Mystic Love Story

A student of physics turns to sanyas to seek salvation. A musician meditates for weeks and months to realize his true Self. Such subjects are dealt for the first time in a forthcoming Hindi movie.

Writer-producer L K Singh’s forthcoming movie Banaras - A Mystic Love Story is unique in many ways. For one, the film draws parallels between physics and the Vedas.

The movie is set in the Holy city of Varanasi, a mystic city that stands for spirituality, religion and love. Urmila Matondkar plays a Physics student at the Banaras Hindu University. She goes through turbulent times after she falls for a reclusive music lover, played by Ashmit Patel . She is forced to leave the city but returns a transformed and enlightened woman after 17 years.

Also intertwined in the story are two interesting characters – one of Babaji ( Naseeruddin Shah ), a mystical character who knows the mysteries of life, and the other is that of a psychologist who presents some fresh views on perception and reality.

Undoubtedly a novel subject for the Indian screen.

Talking about the movie’s basic theme, the movie’s director Pankaj Parashar said in an interview: “It kind of connects quantum of physics to what the Vedas say.”

THE FACT

In reality, there have been scientists in the west who have explored similar subjects in their studies and research. For instance, renowned physicist Fritjof Capra has written books that explore the parallels between atomic physics and eastern mysticism. His books ‘The Tao Of Physics’ and ‘The Turning Point’ deal with such subjects.

Back to ‘Banaras’. Urmila did a lot of research for her role of a physics scholar-turned-sanyasin in the film. She also read books like ‘An Autobiography Of A Yogi’.

‘Banaras’ also captures some of the rarely seen sites of the Holy city on celluloid. The movie’s producer L K Singh is originally from Banaras and he was able to get access to and shoot in places like Kabir's tomb, the Krishnamurthy Institute and the Vishwanath temples.

The film is set to release on April 7.
