'Taj Mahal' enthralls Pakistanis

Akbar Khan’s movie Taj Mahal had a star-studded premiere in Lahore on Wednesday.

The movie, story of love between Mughal Emperor Shahjahan and his beautiful wife Mumtaz Mahal, was very well received by Pakistani moviegoers at its launch.

Present at the movie’s launch were its stars Sonya Jehan , Zulfi Syed and director Akbar Khan along with his brother Feroz Khan and Bollywood star Fardeen Khan .

Mahesh Bhatt , who has been instrumental in setting the first few milestones in promoting Indo-Pak amity through exchange of films and artists, was also present and was very vocal in speaking about the ways in which the entertainment industries of the two countries can benefit from each other.

Sonya Jehan, who plays Mumtaz Mahal in the film, is half Pakistani and half French. She is the grand daughter of Pakistan's renowned singer Noorjahan.

Sonya, who has lived on both sides of the border, says there are many more similarities than differences between the people of India and Pakistan. She hoped the two countries would encourage such cultural exchanges in the future.

‘Taj Mahal’ is the second Indian movie to be screened in Pakistan, breaking a four-decade-old ban, after K Asif’s classic ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ which has met with an overwhelming response by Pakistani moviegoers.

The delegation of Indian film personalities in Lahore was joined by India’s Minister for Tourism and Culture, Ambika Soni, who supported better cultural exchange between the two countries. She said India wants to hold a festival of Pakistani films and also expressed possibility of exchange of Punjabi films on both sides of Punjab.
