Film critics in the UK have panned Aishwarya Rai ’s latest movie, the Mistress Of Spices .

The movie has released in the UK a week before its release in India on April 28. And although Gurinder Chadha (wife of the movie’s director Paul Mayeda Berges) has described Ash’s acting in the film as the best performance of her career till date, the film critics of reputed tabloids in Britain beg to differ.

Film critic Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian has some strong words for Aishwarya Rai’s acting skills. Rhetorically questioning Ash’s acting abilities, Bradshaw asks in his review: “…is there a wishier, washier, wimpier actor anywhere in the known universe?”

In the film, Ash plays an enigmatic young woman named Tilo who is trained in the ancient magical art of healing through spices. She offers remedies through the spices in a small San Francisco store called the 'Spice Bazaar’.

In his review, Bradshaw describes Ash’s character in the film as a “sort of like Juliette Binoche in ‘Chocolat’, only more annoying, if that's possible, which sadly it is.”

Another critic Philip French, too, was unsparing in his review.

“The one-sided conversations with the spices in her shop provide the kind of creepy experience that would make a cobra feel like shedding his skin,” Philip French writes.

David Edwards, the critic of the tabloid Mirror, eulogized Ash’s beauty but panned her acting abilities.

Edwards writes: “Aishwarya Rai isn't just beautiful - she's so incredibly, staggeringly, unbelievably good looking…Alas, on the strength of her latest movie outing, the former Miss World is in danger of becoming little more than an improbably pretty face, here delivering a performance as forgettable as the film itself.”

Edwards describes the movie as a “reel letdown.”

At the UK box-office, ‘Mistress Of Spices’ opened at the 12th spot with a paltry collection of £85,563 at 56 screens.

The movie is based on a book of the same title by author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. The movie stars Aishwarya with the 44-yr-old American actor Dylan McDermott .

The movie is the directorial debut of Paul Mayeda Berges.
