HOME | SCOOP!! & NEWS | BOLLYWOOD Aishwarya Rai : A beauty without box-office success01st May 2006 22.00 IST By Aparajita Ghosh When was the last time we saw a movie starring Aishwarya Rai become a hit at the box-office? Ironical as it may sound, but Aishwarya Rai, arguably the top actress in Bollywood, has had a dismal record at giving hit movies. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdaas was the last Ash starrer that tasted box-office success. In fact, in her entire acting career in Hindi films, Ash has so far had only three hits - Taal , Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and 'Devdaas'. Her movies in the last two years - Kyon, Ho Gaya Na and Shabd - were disasters at the marquee. Even Gurinder Chadha's Bride and Prejudice failed to attract audiences to the theatres.
And now comes The Mistress Of Spices , directed by Chadha's husband Paul Mayeda Berges and starring Ash as a woman with magical powers of healing people through spices. Despite the high expectations, the movie has been panned unanimously by the critics in India and abroad. And it looks like this is going to be yet another Ash starrer to sink at the box-office. Some critics have been unsparing on Rai. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian questions: "Aishwarya Rai - is there a wishier, washier, wimpier actor anywhere in the known universe?" So, is it really the case? Is Ash just a beautiful, elegant face with little talent inside? Not really if you see her performances in films like 'Chokher Bali' and Raincoat . So perhaps it all boils down to her choice of projects. If we compare Ash with other actresses like Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta , we surprisingly find that both Rani and Preity have more number of hit movies to their names than Ash. And Priyanka Chopra has been on the rise and will this year be seen in a number of films - Krrish and Don - that have tremendous potential at the box-office. Ash, on the other hand, will next be seen in Jagmohan Mundhra's Provoked in which she plays a battered housewife. Ash's forthcoming Bollywood projects include Umrao Jaan , Dhoom 2 and Guru .
