Aamir Khan'Fanaa' ends the dry spell in Bollywood
01st June 2006  19.10 IST

Aamir Khan ’s latest release Fanaa has ended the dry spell at the box office.

‘Fanaa’ is Aamir’s second consecutive hit in this year after Rang De Basanti that released in January. The Bollywood box-office collections in between these two films have been rather lacklustre, with most of the films biting the dust and only a few proving to be average grossers.

Although ‘Fanaa’ has been panned by critics, it seems to have appealed to all kinds of audiences.

Industry estimates show ‘Fanaa’ has almost recovered its cost of about Rs 25 crore since its release on Friday, even though it is not being screened in Gujarat, a key market for Bollywood.

Even in North America, the film opened at the 13th position on the box office chart and raked in a decent amount of $ 880,000 over its four-day holiday weekend on 72 screens.

Analysts say while the film got a good opening due to the curiosity factor of the first time pairing of Aamir and Kajol , audiences have appreciated it even after the novelty wore off.

And Bollywood can look forward to a slew of big releases that are set to follow in the next few months – like Rakesh Roshan’s Krrish , Vishal Bhardwaj’s Omkara and Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna .

So far this year, only few films have managed to find favour at the box office and all of them have catered to niche audiences.

While ‘Rang De Basanti’ appealed to urban multiplex audiences, a comedy like Malamaal Weekly scored with Hindi speaking audiences.
