Yun Hota premieres to a packed house at Osian Film Fest

Naseeruddin Shah’s directorial debut Yun Hota To Kya Hota was met with an overwhelming response from the movie buffs at the ongoing Osian Film Festival of Asian Cinema in New Delhi.

The long queue outside the Siri Fort complex on Wednesday seemed never ending. Inside, the auditorium was jam-packed and those who could not find any seats, squatted in the aisles.

The evening’s host, actor Rajit Kapoor, introduced Naseeruddin Shah as “Captain Nemo” (the character Naseer played in ‘The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen’). Dressed in a blue coat and grey trousers, Naseer walked on the stage to be greeted with a huge applause from the audience.

Naseer introduced the movie and deliberately avoided revealing much about its story before the screening. By this time, none of the movie’s actors had arrived – probably caught in the rush-hour traffic of a normal Delhi evening.

Anyway, the movie’s screening began.

The film is the story of four different characters, all of them headed to the USA. The four stories run parallel and the characters also cross each other’s paths. But one terrible tragedy in the US will decide the same fate for all these characters, except one.

At the intermission point, there was a brief break in the screening. It was then Naseer came on the stage once again and, in his characteristic eloquence, introduced the movie’s actors.

The first one to walk on the stage was Irfaan Khan . The actor was wearing a cap and hardly had he spoken a few words on the microphone, there was a demand from the audience that he remove his cap so that they can see his face clearly. To this the actor joked: “Main ander se ganjaa hoon” (I’m bald inside). However, Irfaan did remove his cap, invoking squeals of adulation from a section of the audience.

After this, Naseer invited his wife Ratna Pathak Shah, who also acts in the film, on to the stage. Ratna said a few words of thanks and after that Jimmy Shergill walked into the spotlight. Wearing a grey shirt over denim jeans, Shergill looked handsome. Shergill said he was always pleased to visit Delhi.

Naseer reserved the best introduction for the movie’s actress Konkana Sen . Naseer described Konkana as “one of the best actresses around.” Konkana, dressed in an all-white outfit, walked on to the stage in a graceful manner.

Naseer then called on his son Imaad Ali, a young man with curly, frazzled hair and a sense of humour to match.

The movie’s other main actors – Paresh Rawal , Ayesha Takia and Karan Khanna – could not make it to the premiere.

Naseer said he was overwhelmed to see the enthusiasm of the movie buffs who had come to see the film. He said the film is about how one stroke of fate can alter the lives of many people forever.

After the movie’s screening, a loud applause reverberated the walls of the auditorium. A visibly overwhelmed Naseer stood from his seat and thanked the audience.

It was then the evening’s host Rajit Kapoor rushed to the microphone to add his last touch to the entertaining evening.

Rajit revealed to the audience that Naseer’s birthday was just three hours away (the movie ended at 9 pm). The entire auditorium then joined Rajit to wish Naseer a happy birthday.

Well, Naseer could not have hoped for a better premiere for his movie.
