What is hampering the run of 'Omkara'

The Vishal Bhardwaj directed venture Omkara is enjoying a good run at the box-office but it could have fared better if reports are to be believed.

The presence of top and talented stars like Naseeruddin Shah , Ajay Devgan , Saif Ali Khan , Vivek Oberoi , Kareena Kapoor , Konkana Sen and Bipasha Basu has not prevented trade pundits from claiming that the distributors have lost money on the film.

A report quotes trade analyst Vikas Mohan as saying, “The entire community of traders and distributors was shocked this week to the lukewarm response to the highly publicised and hyped to the hilt blockbuster 'Omkara'. The countdown to the release was sensational with an enormous media campaign. However, at the end of the day despite an illustrious star cast, the film has failed to ring the cash registers. The overdose of expletives used in the film is responsible for the film’s downfall. It’s a shame that director Vishal Bhardwaj who has also penned the dialogues of the film made top stars mouth foul words. That itself aborts the patronage of family audience notably the ladies.”

“The film may be appreciated by the elite and the critics but most of the distributors may face heavy losses,” he added.

Another trade analyst Taran Adarsh is also of the same view: “'Omkara' is dark and disturbing. The generous use of the cuss words gives the viewer cold sweat. The writers could have toned down the expletives in the film. Also, the tense moments get too heavy after a point and would work only for those who appreciate realistic cinema.”

“'Omkara' is a brilliant film from the maker’s point of view and is also embellished with top-notch performances but the box office has a different story to tell. The dark and disturbing theme and also the expletives will curtail its prospects at the box office. The high pricing per territory also goes against it,” he added.

And according to another trade analyst S. Kumar Mohan: “If Vishal Bhardwaj wants to enjoy commercial success he must not forget commercial ingredients and traditional treatment.”
