Munnabhai goes to Hollywood!

We have seen Hollywood movies getting rehashed in Hindi film industry. Now, perhaps for the first time, a Bollywood film is being remade in America.

Even as Rajkumar Hirani’s latest movie Lage Raho Munnabhai is drawing huge adulation and appreciation from the movie buffs and critics alike, filmmaker Mira Nair is bracing up to remake the movie’s previous version Munnabhai MBBS in Hollywood.

The Hindi movie, released in the last months of 2003, was a superhit at the box-office. But above all, it gave us the loveable characters of Munnabhai and Circuit, the two good-hearted goons who help people in their own typical, unpolished ways.

The USP of ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ was the wacky sense of humour of Munna and Circuit (played by Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi ). But the film was not merely a comedy. It also had many emotionally moving moments.

Mira Nair’s Hollywood version of the film is called ‘Gansta MD’. The film will star Chris Tucker in the lead role.

Rajkumar Hirani, the director of ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ believes that Tucker will make a very different Munna from what Sanjay Dutt did. In Hirani’s words, Tucker’s Munna would be “less goofy and more wisecracking”.

Mira Nair is said to have roped in Jason Filardi to write the screenplay of ‘Gansta MD’. Filardi was the writer of the Hollywood comedy ‘Bringing Down The House’, starring Adam Sandler in the lead.

Presently, Mira is busy with her next project ‘The Namesake’ that stars Tabu , Irrfan Khan and Kal Penn.

The shooting of ‘Gangsta MD’ is likely to start early next year.
