Deepa Mehta’s 'Water' to compete for Oscar

Deepa Mehta’s critically acclaimed film Water has been selected as the official entry to the Oscars for the Best Foreign Language Film from Canada.

Although Deepa Mehta is an Indian origin filmmaker, she is based in Canada. Most of the films she has made have been Canada-India co-productions.

Her last movie ‘Water’ has not yet released in India, but it has enjoyed tremendously good run at the theatres in North America. The film has grossed more dollars in North America than the earnings of Aamir Khan's hit Rang De Basanti there.

Deservedly, ‘Water’ is now being sent as the official Canadian entry for the next year’s Academy Awards. Telefilm Canada announced the decision to send the film, which will now be screened before a special Oscar committee. The film will contend with 82 other entries to wrest a place in the five nominees.

Starring Lisa Ray and John Abraham , ‘Water’ is a period drama about Hindu widows in 1930s.

The movie was originally supposed to star Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das. It was nearly abandoned by Deepa Mehta after protests by Hindu organisations halted filming in the year 2000. The director received death threats and was forced to shelve the movie after Indian authorities shut down filming amid protests by Hindu outfits. She finally shot the film in Sri Lanka five years later.

‘Water’ was the opening film of the Toronto International Film Festival last year. The film won the Golden Kinnaree award at the Bangkok International Film Festival in Thailand in February this year.
