In the original, Radha is Thakur’s (played by Sanjeev Kumar) daughter-in-law, but in the new version she is Inspector Ranveer’s (played by Malayalam superstar Mohanlal ) widowed sister-in-law.
And Basanti’s character (played by Hema Malini in the original) is being played by none other than Ramu’s current favourite Nisha Kothari , who has sizzled in James and Shiva .
Nisha’s name won’t be Basanti – it will be Ghunghroo – and she’ll drive a rickshaw called Laila. Like Basanti, Ghunghroo constantly speaks Laila, who she considers her soulmate.
While in the original, Radha and Basanti never met, in Ramu’s version, Devi and Ghunghroo are best of friends.
So there you have it, mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan in the role of Gabbar Singh, (played in the original by late Amjad Khan ), Ajay Devgan as Veeru (played in the original by Dharmendra ), and Mohit Ahlawat the quiet Jai (played by Bachchan in the original).
With his remake of ‘Sholay’, Varma will either goof it up big time or create history.
